ABOUT US

Redstone : Clean Energy Supply

The 100 MW Redstone Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Tower project forms part of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP).

The project was awarded the preferred bidder status in 2015, First synchronization is expected in 4th Quarter 2023.

A consortium led by ACWA Power, has developed the Redstone CSP Independent Power Project, located in Northern Cape Province, 600 km west of Johannesburg in the Republic of South Africa.

With years of experience in the industry, we are committed to delivering exceptional results that exceed our clients’ expectations.

Key Project Information

Circular Heliostat Field

This is a large circular area with mirrors that reflect the sunlight up to the approximately 250 m high central receiver tower;

Thermal Energy Storage System

This is where the energy captured in the Receiver is stored in the form of hot molten salts and these hot salts are then used to produce steam in the steam generation system which then drives the Turbine that produce the power;

Air-cooled Condenser

An air-cooled condenser then condenses the steam and recycles it to minimize the consumption of water;

34 km 132kV Overhead Line

Approximately 34 km 132kV overhead line is then used to transmit the power from the plant to the Olien Substation, this will be built by Redstone’s EPC contractor but will be handed over to Eskom; and

Other Site Structures Include

A construction camp – accommodation and associated facilities for approximately 200 people; administrative and office buildings; a visitors’ center; equipment and materials lay down area; assembly plant; concrete batching plant; vehicle workshops and wash bays; a fuel storage area; a temporary general waste storage facility; and a hazardous material storage facility.

The project will generate power by using Concentrated Solar Power “CSP” tower technology and generate 100 MW net power to the grid.

Redstone CSP project will have 12 hours of thermal storage, which is the largest in Africa and will be amongst the most efficient solar thermal power plants in the world.

Additional Plant Features

Technology

The heliostat field, featuring over 1 million square meters of mirrors, surrounds a CSP tower with a molten salt thermal receiver that reaches a height of 250 meters, making it the tallest in Africa. This advanced molten salt storage capacity enables the plant to generate energy for an additional 12 hours after sunset at full load.

Molten Salt Receiver

The receiver assembly, installed at the top of the tower, converts solar radiation reflected onto it into thermal energy. It consists of cylindrical tubes that act as a heat exchanger, heating up the molten salts flowing through them.

Thermal Energy Storage

The plant utilizes 30,500 tons of potassium and sodium nitrate salt stored in two tanks—one hot and one cold. The hot tank reaches temperatures of 566°C, while the cold tank maintains 290°C. This system allows the plant to bank solar energy during the day and release it at night or as needed.

Grid Connection

The grid connection involves the construction of a new 132 kV switching station called “Noko” and a 32 km transmission line that connects to Eskom’s Olien Substation.
